Should Birth Control be Illegal in the United States - Free Essay Example
Should birth control be illegal in the United States? One of the most controversial topics in todays society benefits women more than they might think. So for all those years you dont want to be pregnant, choosing a highly effective method of contraception can also be a smart move toward a healthier future. Birth control can help with regulating severe periods, preventing unwanted pregnancies, and reduces the risks of getting ovarian cysts and uterine cancer. People might just think birth control is for preventing pregnancies but there are many other benefits birth control gives to women. Birth control can help women who have severe periods. Birth control reduces the amount of blood during a womens period. Many women have very heavy blood flow during their menstrual cycle and the estrogen in birth control breaks down the blood and thickens it into a blood clot. Approximately 80 percent of women with a healthy uterus and heavy bleeding respond to birth control pills. Another problem women have with periods is the pain they get from cramps . Menstrual cramps are caused by the release of prostaglandins, this causes your uterine muscles to contract, causing cramps. Birth control pills are made up of estrogen and progestin, which blocks the production of prostaglandin. Birth control can also help with migraines many women experience during their periods. Migraines happen to women when the estrogen level drops, which is why women might get head aches right before their period because the estrogen levels fluctuate. Birth control helps prevent these migraines by keeping the estrogen level stable. One of the main thing and most controversial things women use birth control for is preventing unwanted pregnancies. Birth control allows people to plan their pregnancies, resulting in better health for both mother and child. Many people say if you dont want a baby then dont have sex. Although that might be true, some adults need to have the enjoyment of sex to stay healthy, and they just might not be ready to have a baby. So women go out a buy birth control to have the enjoyment they want but not have a child at the moment. Another reason birth control is a better way of preventing unwanted pregnancies is that it is safer and more sanitary. There has been many occasion where women would find out they were pregnant and use coat hangers to kill their babies because they couldnt afford an abortion. If the women could just have birth control they wouldnt have to go to such a drastic manner of killing the baby. Women would also kill themself because theyd found out about their unwanted pr egnancies. Teenage pregnancy is one of the leading causes of suicide in the Central American country of 6 million people. Another way birth control helps women is by reducing the risk of ovarian cysts and uterine cancer. Ovarian cysts occur when a lot of small cysts develop on your ovaries which are small egg follicles and can result in altered hormone levels. Birth control can block ovulation by stopping the egg from leaving the carton so using birth control can reduce the amount of ovarian cysts. The pill reduces your risk of ovarian cancer by at least 40%â⬠and the longer you use it, the more it helps! Birth control can also reduce the risk of uterine cancer. Uterine cancer occurs when cells in the uterus change and grow abnormally forming a tumor. Birth control helps prevent the overgrowth of the uterine lining. All hormonal methods, including the shot, the implant, and the hormonal IUD, also protect against endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining). To summarize why birth control shouldnt be illegal, birth control helps with regulating severe periods, prevents unwanted pregnancies, and reduces the risk of ovarian cysts and uterine cancer. Many women use birth control throughout the world to help with many different health conditions. Making birth control illegal is like making any other drug used for medical reasons illegal. People may not agree with birth control, but it helps women every day to be able to have better lives by stabilizing their lives and making them feel healthier. They enhanced womens opportunities to control childbearing and their careers, allowed them to choose contraception and plan fertility independently of their partner or spouse, increased female human capital accumulation, labour market options and earnings.
